Details of Colored Contact Lenses
Do you know little about colored contact lenses? Read the information below and you will learn what you want to know.
What is a colored contact lens?
Colored contact lenses, sometimes also called colored lenses or pupil lenses, are placed on the cornea of the eyeball to protect the eyes and correct vision. According to the rigidity of the materials, we divide them into three main types of contact lenses, including rigid lenses, semi-rigid lenses, and soft lenses. For people with myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism, colored contact lenses can be very helpful. They not only make them more beautiful in appearance but can also be very convenient for going out or traveling.
To some extent, contact lenses will play an important role in controlling and curing eye diseases. However, when you want to wear contact lenses, it is best to have a detailed examination at a hospital or professional organization to help you choose the right colored contact lenses.
Development of colored contact lens technology
You will learn about three main technologies of contact lenses.
First is the dry printing technology. In this technology, color is generally applied to the outer or inner side of the contact lens. This method is quite simple and requires low cost; however, it will bring a poor experience, such as easy color fading, which is why it disappeared in 2010.
Second, there is the popular sandwich printing technology, or double-layer coating, which consists of printing the color on a layer of pigment that is between two layers of base material, perfectly preventing the fading problem. This sandwich production method is complicated. Many contact lenses on the current market adopt this method.
The third method is different from the previous two, which colors the lens in the middle of a layer. Using this method can also solve the fading problem, and this type of production is simple, as well as providing you with a comfortable feeling when wearing contact lenses.
Materials of contact lenses
There are also three materials for colored contact lenses, just like the production technology, which include common materials, silicone hydrogel materials, and non-ionic materials. However, considering the wearing sensation, suitability, moisture, and softness of the lens, we mainly choose silicone hydrogel materials.
Figure of colored contact lenses
When choosing your contact lenses, there are several main figure models you can consider. They are radial, dot, vaporous, circular, irregular, etc. Just like the applied name, when you choose different contact lenses, there are various figures. No matter which one you choose, it has no effect on the prescription of contact lenses.
1, 2, 3, 4 tones of contact lenses
According to different color combinations of lenses, we group these colored contact lenses into single-tone, double-tone, three-tone, and four-tone.
1. The single tone means that there is only one color in the contact lenses. Generally, black and brown types are very famous.
2. The two-tone lenses mainly add a black or dark outer ring, which mainly offers the effect of larger eyes, making your eyes look brighter.
3. The three-tone contact lenses add another color to the two-tone contact lenses. There are also various types you can choose from.
4. The four-tone colored contact lenses add another color to the three-tone. The more complicated the design, the better the brightness and enlargement effect.
OTR (Oxygen Transmission Rate)
The term OTR comes from the English Oxygen Transmission Rate. For some new friends in contact lenses, sometimes they may feel uncomfortable when wearing colored contact lenses; one of the reasons may be the lack of oxygen in the cornea. Under normal conditions, our cornea needs to breathe. When the OTR of the contact lenses is not up to standard, your eyes may not feel well. So, when you choose your new contact lenses, you should carefully consider the OTR.
Some tips
1. Make sure to pinch the contact lenses before sleeping to give the cornea more breath and oxygen.
2. Make sure to pinch the contact lenses before swimming to prevent microorganisms in the water from contaminating the lenses.
3. Due to the different places of use, for example, glasses are in front of the eyes, while contact lenses are closer to the cornea than glasses, to some extent, for myopia, the degree of contact lenses is lower than that of glasses.
